Flower child
A flower child (in some parts of Germany scattering angel is called) a child , the occasion of a wedding ceremony in front of the newlyweds in the exodus from the church flowers scattered.
On the way out of the church - for some bridal couples also on the way to the altar - one or two smaller children - mostly between the ages of 3 and 10 years - sprinkle small flowers so that the bridal couple walks on a colorful "carpet of flowers". In some churches with sensitive floors , sprinkling flowers is not allowed. Since the 1970s, the flower children have accompanied the bride and groom when they move out of the registry office , if there is no church wedding.
Girls wear festive dresses for this occasion , which can be based on the style of the wedding dress . Boys are also festively dressed. The scattered flowers are in a small basket that the children carry.
The scattering of flowers is an ancient pagan custom . The fertility gods are supposed to draw their attention to the bride and groom through the scent of the flowers and provide rich blessings for children.
