Blyxa japonica ( Japanese thread herb ) is a species of the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae).

description

The stems are elongated, 10 to 20 centimeters high and branched. The leaves grow on the stem, are lanceolate, 3 to 6 centimeters × 1 to 3 millimeters in size and have a pointed end. The spathe are seated, green and 1 to 3 centimeters × 1 to 3 millimeters in size. The flowers are bisexual. The sepals are linear-lanceolate, 2 to 4 × 0.5 to 1 millimeter in size and green with a purple central rib. The petals are 6 to 10 × 0.5 to 1 millimeter in size. There are 3 stamens . The stamens are smooth and 1 to 3 millimeters long. The anthers are 1.8 to 2.5 millimeters long. The ovary is cone-shaped. The stylus are 3 to 4 millimeters in size. The fruits measure 1 to 2.5 centimeters. The 30 to 60 seeds are narrowly elliptical and smooth.

The species blooms and produces fruit from May to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72.

Occurrence

Blyxa japonica grows in rice fields, ponds and canals. The species occurs in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, New Guinea, Vietnam, China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Sichuan, Zhejiang) , Taiwan, Korea and Japan.

Systematics

The species was first described by Miquel in 1866 as Hydrilla japonica . Ascherson & Gürke placed it in 1889 as Blyxa japonica in the genus Blyxa . Synonyms are Blyxa laevissima Hayata and Blyxa angustipetala (Ridley) Masamune var. Laevissima (Hayata) Masamune .

One can distinguish between two varieties:

  • Blyxa japonica var. Alternifolia (Miq.) CDKCook & Lüönd : It occurs in Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra.
  • Blyxa japonica var. Japonica : It occurs in tropical and subtropical Asia.
