Karl Maximovich , even Carl Maximowicz or Karl Ivanovich Maximowitsch (born November 11, jul. / 23. November  1827 greg. In Tula ; † February 4 jul. / 16th February  1891 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a German-Russian Botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Maxim. "

Live and act

Maximowicz was born in Tula as a German Baltic . He studied botany at Dorpat University from 1845–1849 . In 1850 he became assistant director at the Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg . In 1852 he became a curator at the herbarium. In 1864 he became the first conservator of the Botanical Garden, and in 1869 director.

to travel

In 1852 he went on a botanical journey through Livonia with Alexander von Bunge , Girgensohn and Schmidt . Then he accompanied Ruprecht on a botanical journey through Ingermanland .

From 1853 to 1857 he accompanied Leopold von Schrenck on a research trip to the Amur region and Sakhalin in East Asia .

From 1859 to 1864 he toured China , Korea and Japan . Here he first came from Irkutsk to the Amur and studied it and its tributaries Sungari and Ussuri . In 1860 he crossed the Sichote-Alin forest mountains and embarked for Korea, where he did research until September 1860. Then he went to Japan and researched the flora there until 1864.

He returned from his research trips with a rich collection of plants. Maximowicz spent many years evaluating the collected specimens; he gave the first description for a variety of plant species .

Honors

The plant genera Maximowiczia Rupr are named after Maximowicz . from the star anise family (Schisandraceae) and Maximowasia Kuntze from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). In 1888 Maximowicz was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
