Božanovići ( Serbian - Cyrillic Божановићи ) is a village in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It belongs to the municipality of Kalinovik and has belonged to the Republika Srpska since the Bosnian War .

geography

Božanovići is a small hamlet located about two kilometers west of the Kalinovik community center at an altitude of 1100 m in the eastern Bosnian highlands. The karst area is rugged, arid and sparsely overgrown. In the north the Treskavica Mountains dominate the landscape, in the west the 1,450 m high mountain Oštrikovac . The Orthodox cemetery is on the southern outskirts.

The number of inhabitants fell steadily in the second half of the 20th century, from 112 in 1961 to only 66 in 1991. In 1991, the inhabitants referred to themselves exclusively as Serbs .

Personalities

The general of the VRS ( Vojska Republike Srpske ) and convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić was born on March 12, 1942 in Božanovići.
