Bo Yibo ( Chinese  薄一波 , Pinyin Bó Yībō ; born February 17, 1908 in Dingxiang , Shanxi , † January 15, 2007 in Beijing ) was a Chinese politician.

Life

Bo had been a member of the Chinese Communist Party since 1925. He was instrumental in organizing the armed Chinese resistance against the invasion of the Japanese army during World War II . Bo incorporated the warlord Yan Xishan into the Red Army , who provided more than 200,000 men.

During the civil war, Bo worked with Liu Shaoqi , who was later overthrown during the Cultural Revolution and died in custody. After the war he was the first secretary of the Office of the Central Committee of the CPC (1949-1954). Bo was Minister of Finance until December 1953, but lost that post to Deng Xiaoping .

From 1956 until the beginning of the Cultural Revolution and again from 1979 to 1982 he was a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China , Deputy Prime Minister , Chairman of the State Economic Commission and Deputy Chairman of the State Council .

During the Cultural Revolution, Jiang Qing imprisoned Bo as a political prisoner for 15 years for his pro-democracy activities . His sons and daughters ( Bo Xiyong , Bo Xilai , Bo Xicheng, and Bo Xining ) were also arrested or sent to the poorest areas of China.

Like Deng Xiaoping, Bo was one of the so-called " Eight Immortals " who still exerted great influence on politics in China in the 1990s. During this time, the beginning of economic reforms and the suppression of the democracy movement on Tian'anmen Square (" Tian'anmen Massacre ").

His son Bo Xilai was Minister of Commerce of the People's Republic of China from 2004 to 2007 and the party leader of the government immediate city ​​of Chongqing from November 2007 until his dismissal in March 2012 . In April 2012, he was also expelled from the Chinese Communist Party's Politburo .
