Bob Freedman

Robert M. "Bob" Freedman (actually Robert Morris , * 1934 in Wollaston , Quincy (Massachusetts) or Mount Vernon (New York) ; † December 22, 2018 in Scottsdale (Arizona) ) was an American jazz musician ( piano , alto saxophone , Arrangement ).

Live and act

Freedman grew up in Massachusetts and Cranston, Rhode Island; first he played the clarinet, then the piano. With Glenn Miller's Method for Orchestral Arranging , he began to be interested in arranging. At the age of 14 he made his first professional appearances as a musician. While doing his military service he was stationed in Arizona; there he played with Chet Baker at regional Army events. In 1953 he presented a first album on Savoy Records , Piano Moods , on which Joe Reichgott had participated on bass and Bob Gibson on drums. From the mid-1950s he worked as a saxophonist and arranger, a. a. for Serge Chaloff , Vido Musso , Maynard Ferguson ( A Message from Newport , 1958), Herb Pomeroy , Woody Herman , Harry Belafonte , Duke Ellington , Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra , Paul Simon and Sarah Vaughan . With Quincy Jones he won a 1978 Grammy for arranging the theme song for The Wiz ( Overture Part One ). He received three other Grammy nominations. In later years he also arranged for Wynton Marsalis ( Hot House Flowers ), Nnenna Freelon , Renee Rosnes , David Fathead Newman , Rebecca Parris , Grover Washington, Jr. and Dianne Reeves . In the field of jazz he was involved in 33 recording sessions as a musician and arranger between 1953 and 2004. Most recently he lived in Arizona.

Freedman also taught at the Berklee School of Music ; he was also the musical director of a Boston recording studio. From 1958 he was a member of the ASCAP ; And We Listened is one of his most famous compositions .
