The bracket-John's wort ( Hypericum hircinum ) is a plant from the genus of hypericum ( Hypericum ).

features

Buck's wort is a dwarf shrub or nanophanerophyte that reaches heights of 20 to 100 (200) centimeters. The branches are brown-red and two-edged. The leaves measure 40 to 70 × 12 to 30 millimeters and have a goat odor. The stamens are arranged in 5 tufts. The sepals, petals and stamens are obsolete. The sepals are lanceolate and 6 millimeters in size. The styles are 3 to 5 times as long as the ovary . The capsule is leathery and red or green.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

Occurrence

Buck's wort occurs in the Mediterranean area. The species grows on river and brook banks, springs and alluvial forests at altitudes from 0 to 1000 meters.

Systematics

There are five subspecies:

  • Hypericum hircinum subsp. albimontanum (Greuter) N.Robson : It occurs from southern Greece to Cyprus. The leaves are broadly ovate to eilanzettlich or triangularly lanceolate and pointed to rounded. The leaf margin is usually more or less curled. The crown is 18 to 20 millimeters in size. The capsule is 5 to 8 millimeters in size.
  • Hypericum hircinum subsp. cambessedesii (Coss. ex Barceló) Sauvage : It occurs in Mallorca.
  • Hypericum hircinum subsp. hircinum : It occurs in Corsica and Sardinia.
  • Hypericum hircinum subsp. maju s (Aiton) N.Robson : It occurs from southern Europe to the Arabian Peninsula. The leaves are narrowly ovate to narrowly lanceolate or triangular-lanceolate and are usually pointed to blunt. The leaf margin is smooth. The crown is (13) 15 to 21 millimeters in size. The capsule is (8) 9 to 14 millimeters in size.
  • Hypericum hircinum subsp. metroi (Maire & Sauvage) Sauvage : It occurs in Morocco.
