The Bodensee-Schule St. Martin (named after Saint Martin von Tours ) is a Catholic elementary and secondary school with a technical level and an attached social science high school in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance . The lessons are based on the Marchtal plan .

The Bodensee-Schule St. Martin School Foundation has been the sponsor since 2007 (church foundation with legal capacity). The foundation was established in November 2007 by the Bishop of Rottenburg, Gebhard Fürst , and is intended to ensure the future of the school.

The previous sponsoring association Free Cath. Schulwerk Friedrichshafen eV was converted into a parents' association.

history

The sponsoring association was founded in February 1970 and began planning in May together with the architects Hahn and Juli. Hermann Witzel, the first rector, was hired in September. The construction work was approved by the city of Friedrichshafen and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on September 15, 1971. Five days later, teaching began with 541 primary school students in 16 school classes and 19 teachers.

A year later, the secondary school was also opened and all-day operations began. The construction work on the gymnasium was completed in 1973, and the outdoor area in 1974. Since the state did not cover the costs for secondary schools and high schools, the original plans for a Catholic educational center were discarded. Instead, those responsible were concerned with developing concepts to strengthen the secondary school and in May 1974 published the first school development plan for free Catholic schools.

In 1975 the first Christmas market took place in the Bodenseeschule. It is an event that has proven itself to this day and is still going on. In 1981 a big festival week was celebrated for the tenth anniversary and the chapel was inaugurated. The school was also dedicated to St. Martin, whose name it still bears today. After years of efforts, a 10th year of schooling and thus the practical level could finally be established in 1993. After a few renovations, the new utility building was opened in 1999 and the “House of the Senses” in 2006, which was equipped with music rooms, a cafeteria and a meditation room, among other things.

degrees

The following state-recognized school-leaving certificates can be obtained at the Bodensee-Schule St. Martin:

  • after 9th grade: secondary school leaving certificate
  • after the 10th grade: secondary school leaving certificate
  • after 12th grade: advanced technical college entrance qualification
  • after 13th grade: Abitur

Form of instruction

The lessons at the Bodensee-Schule contain the three elements of the Marchtaler Plan , as well as the specialist lessons . In addition to this, there are also lunchtime leisure time, leisure time education and craft education.

Morning and closing circle

Every school week begins with the morning circle . The focus here is on the senses of the students and their gifts and often addressed individually. Another important element is the silence that is used to reflect and adjust to the week ahead. The topic of the lesson is also included in the morning circle and placed in a larger context. In addition, there is a closing group at the end of the week in which the previous week is reflected. Thanking you for what you have achieved also plays a major role.

Free quiet work

Free quiet work is working in an environment prepared by the teacher. The child is free to choose the topic they want to deal with. The work does not have to be finished after the usual 45 minutes, but can stretch over longer periods of time. The type of engagement with the topic and the choice of partner are also free. This is intended to address the children more individually and encourage their independence and initiative.

Networked teaching

Here the learning content is not divided into subjects. Instead, a topic is viewed and linked from several angles. These interlinked subjects are: German, religious studies, home and general studies, history, social studies, economics, computer science, geography, physics, chemistry and biology, as well as fine arts, music, textiles, housekeeping and technology if required. Mathematics, on the other hand, can usually be found in free, still work.

Subject teaching

Of course, not all subjects can be networked with one another. Mathematics is part of free quiet work, English and sport are always given as subject lessons, as they can be taught better by a specialist. Technology, computer science, housekeeping and textiles are also taught as specialist lessons, but should, if possible, be included in the topic of networked lessons.

Lunch break

Lunch break (known as MFZ by the students) is another name for the lunch break. It starts with lunch. All students then meet in the large dining room and eat together. Great importance is attached to table rules, such as getting up together after dinner. Afterwards there is a lot of free time that the students can design themselves. There are a variety of sports on offer, e.g. B. football on the large sports field or board games, reading or a simple walk on the spacious school grounds or in the forest.

The MFZ is valid from the third to the tenth grade.

Craft education

For the secondary school students, one afternoon per week is used for craft training. You can choose between different working groups (working groups), such as clay work, textile work or bookbinding. In the higher classes there is also the possibility of various internships. In the eighth grade, for example, a three-week internship. In the ninth grade, the students then do various annual assignments. It is now officially recognized as a project appraisal and thus part of the final exam. The students choose a topic that does not have to be part of the lesson and create a work on it. This is a further development of free silent work, as the students can plan their entire year here and thus have better time options.

On the day of the exhibition, the works will be presented to the public. The annual work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The work is planned and described and finally completed. Examples of such annual work are the pottery of a tea set or the sewing of a piece of clothing - but also buildings made of wood or the like.

Recreational education

Another afternoon is used for free time education. The pupils are given free time at school, so to speak, within a given framework, of course. Here, too, every six months they choose their program from the following areas: sport, games, theater, circus, music, visual design, textile work, musical work, technology, new media, nature, the environment and social issues. The educational goal is a meaningful leisure time, as well as discipline, concentration, patience, accuracy and perseverance.

Family classes

In primary school there are mixed-year classes, the so-called family classes . They consist of two years: first graders with third graders or second graders with fourth graders. A class teacher, i.e. a constant reference person, always belongs to a family class. The classes are pedagogically useful, as the older ones in a class can help the younger ones and thus form a working group. The fourth or third graders and the first or second graders should practice together.

Testimonies

The Bodensee School follows Pestalozzi's principle , who says:

"Never compare one child to another child."

Therefore, not much value is placed on grades in the certificate. Instead, the certificate folder contains a personal letter written by the class teacher and the subject teacher, reports on the work of the student in craft and leisure groups as well as work groups and reports on participation in projects and extracurricular events. In addition, the student chooses valuable work that he has done in the previous school year to present to the teachers, parents and classmates.

Events in the Bodensee School

Due to the large school complex and the many well-equipped rooms, the Bodensee-Schule is an ideal place for school and extracurricular events.

mcm festival

MCM Festival 2004 in the dining room

The mcm Festival, a music festival organized by the ecumenical youth initiative MCM (modern-christian-music) , took place for 14 years (2000-2014) in the Bodensee-Schule. Workshops and a sports tournament were usually offered at lunchtime. In the evening the two-day festival began with an ecumenical youth service. Various local and national bands from all over Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Switzerland played Christian music ( rock and hip-hop, etc.) until late into the night.

Pre-Christmas school festival

For this festival, which takes place on the Saturday before the first Advent , each class prepares a program item in their classroom. It is important that the offer is diverse. It ranges from plays and exhibitions of various student works to handicrafts. There is also a Christmas market. The festival is the first highlight of the school year.

Theater festival

The Theatertage am See is an advanced training course in theater education that has been held annually since 1984. The festival, in which amateur theater players take part, has a different motto every year (2006 under the motto “Music and Theater”). Various theater courses and projects to promote theater work in schools are also offered. In order to take part in the festival, amateur and school theater groups must apply.

Nomination for the German School Prize 2006 and 2008

The Bodenseeschule was nominated for the German School Prize in 2006 and 2008 and received 6th place in each case.
