Bodil Ann Rosing (born December 27, 1877 in Copenhagen , Denmark as Bodil Hammerich , † December 31, 1941 in Hollywood , California ) was a Danish - American actress who took on supporting roles in around 85 films between 1925 and 1941.

life and career

Bodil Rosing was born the daughter of a music dean of a university and a well-known pianist. In the 1890s she trained as an actress at the Danish National Theater in her hometown of Copenhagen. She then worked as a theater actress. In 1898 Rosing married the Norwegian doctor Eine Janson, and they had three or four children from this marriage until the couple divorced in 1919. Rosing had her only appearance on Broadway in 1922 in the play Fools Errant as a maid. Actually already withdrawn from the acting business, she came to Hollywood in 1924 for the wedding of her daughter Tove to the film star Monte Blue . Coincidentally, during the visit, she was cast for a small role in Pretty Ladies and received a studio contract with MGM. Rosing quickly made a name for herself as an actress of matronly characters such as mothers, maids, cooks and landladies.

Rosing had her most important appearance in 1927 in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's highly acclaimed love film Sunrise - Song of Two People , in which she embodied the faithful old maid of Janet Gaynor . The character actress was extremely versatile in her roles: She could play many nationalities and the ages of her characters often differed significantly from her own. With the beginning of the sound film era , the actress' roles became somewhat smaller because of her Danish accent, but she remained a busy character actress with around 85 films until her death. She was seen in the Greta Garbo film The Colorful Veil as the wife of her compatriot Jean Hersholt , and she also played the role of Lionel Barrymore's German-born neighbor in Frank Capra's Oscar-winning comedy Lebenskünstler (1938). Shortly before her death, she said the goal of her acting had always been "to reach the hearts of my audience".

In 1941 Bodil Rosing died of a heart attack at the age of 64. She is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale next to her son-in-law, Monte Blue.
