Years of study at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Rudolf Haegele from 1970–73 and again at the Karlsruhe Academy from 1973–76, there from 1974 to 1976 as a master student of Herbert Kitzel . From 1976 to 1977, Kraft held a DAAD scholarship in Amsterdam . 1977–86 the artist lived in Bremen. 1978–1988 he was a member of the Bremen artist group Gruppe Grün. Further grants followed, for example a studio grant from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1978/1979 and the Künstlerhaus grant from Worpswede from 1979 to 1980 . Between 1981 and 1983 the painter stayed in Italy and had a studio in Bologna . Since 1987 he has lived and worked in Ettlingen , Karlsruhe and Kressbronn on Lake Constance . Kraft's work has its roots in dealing with the work of his teachers at the Karlsruhe Academy, Horst Antes and Herbert Kitzel . Antes, himself a student of HAP Grieshaber in Karlsruhe , was one of the founders of the New Figuration , which, starting primarily from Karlsruhe, gave important new impulses to figurative painting in Germany in the 1960s. His early works show large-format motifs in which the human figure - mostly it is the artist himself or portraits of friends or artist colleagues - is sometimes seen from behind in front of a wall surface. His painting in the 1970s was strongly determined by a representational language of forms. This style changed after studying in Bologna . Small-format pictures were created there that were developed purely from color. The “tozzi rossi” with their mostly square image surface formally refer to the following “quadri”. In them you can already find his predilection for composing individual images into large blocks.

The motif of the window can also be found in Kraft's work, in which the geometrically structured image composition with latticed lines of lines seems to allow a view from a room to the outside. These "window pictures" give the human figure, seen in outline and often depicted as a torso , space for activities or events that can be imagined. In the “studio walls” (since 2007), the artist deals with an unusual image format. They are narrow canvases that are only 50 centimeters wide and 2.20 meters high. The long, partly two-part vertical rectangles are descriptions of the state of the space as well as the content.
