Body Modification E-Zine (abbreviated BME or BMEzine ) is an online magazine that reports on all types of body modifications and is considered the main medium of the scene. The entire spectrum from tattoos to piercings and implants to castrations and amputations is treated. It was founded in 1994 by Shannon Larratt, and in May 2008, full responsibility for the content was passed to Shannon's ex-wife Rachel Larratt.

offer

BME was expanded in 2000 with a community-oriented offering called IAM.bmezine . In 2004, however, some parts were removed because of criticism of certain practices documented there such as amputations, implants and mutilation. At the same time, the Modblog.bmezine was added, which is regularly updated and informs about current developments in the scene. The offer was later expanded to include BMEink , which is exclusively dedicated to the area of tattoos. Also BMEVIDEO , a site with videos of extreme modifications operated by BME. However, this requires a separate user access, is not suitable for minors throughout and is more intended for a niche audience.

BME was no longer maintained between September 2007 and mid-January 2008; i.e., no new content was added. The background to this were disputes between BME founder Shannon Larratt and his wife Rachel. According to Shannon Larratt on the rec.arts.bodyart newsgroup , his access to BME has been blocked by some employees. In May 2008 Shannon ended his participation in this project.

ModCon

The ModCon (Modification Conference) is a congress of the body modification scene, which is organized by BME and takes place annually. The first ModCon was held in Toronto , the home of BME, in May 1999 . The ModCon is one of the most important meetings of the scene, to which many well-known tattoo artists , piercers and cutters (surgeons) appear. Participation is only possible by personal invitation from Shannon Larratt.

Legal restrictions in Germany

In Germany, BME was classified as harmful to young people by the Federal Inspectorate for Media Harmful to Young People in 2002 , as BME's Internet offering is suitable for socio-ethically disorienting adolescents; This decision was necessary because BME not only in the closed member area (amputations, castrations, splitting tongues, etc.), but also for every internet user - thus also for minors - disturbing photographs (head and face tattoos, lip plates, extremely stretched piercings in different body areas , Examples from the closed area for potential subscribers, etc.) that impair healthy mental development - in accordance with German law. The competent authority objected u. a. “ Deeply despicable horror scenarios of acts of violence against people ” as well as “ a rough type of representation in the sexual area that degrades people to a mere (exchangeable) object of sexual desire in a way that incites the sexual drive. Search engines , e. B. Google , informs that certain search queries when using the German version of Google may not lead to the offending media offer. Due to the legal reasons mentioned, corresponding search results will be removed. The Internet user is informed about this with a text module: “ For legal reasons, Google has removed 'XY' result (s) from this page. For more information on these legal grounds, please visit ChillingEffects.org. Subdomains of the Body Modification E-Zines are currently affected to a limited extent since the registration of a direct domain through the medium mentioned, since not all BME-relevant domains are legally recorded. The Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People does not generally publish which media are subject to restrictions, since sales, presentation, distribution and advertising restrictions for indexed media are the legal consequence of the successful indexing process.

In 2006, US authorities requested the removal of certain content from BME. Larratt did not give in to this, however, but moved the entire server to Canada , from where BME has been operated ever since. He later commented on this as follows: "When Germany came after BME for" endangering the youth "and demanded that I make changes to the site to comply with German law, my response was to simply not visit Germany again (and I'm a German citizen). When the US started to pressure us, we moved all of our servers and presence out of the country and backed off on plans to live in the US. No changes were ever made to the site, and no images were ever removed - if anything, the pressure made me push those areas even more. "
