Bohdan Dmytrowytsch Hawrylyshyn ( Ukrainian Богдан Дмитрович Гаврилишин ; born October 21, 1926 in Koropez , Poland , today Ukraine ; † October 24, 2016 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian- Canadian economist .

Live and act

During the Second World War he came to Germany, where he later completed his schooling as a refugee . In 1947 he emigrated to Canada, where he first worked as a woodcutter and later as a waiter and was the first post-war immigrant to be accepted at the University of Toronto . He received an engineering degree in 1952 and his master's degree in 1954. As an employee of a multinational company, he was sent to Switzerland to study at the International Management Institute for a year .

In 1960 he returned to the International Management Institute , now the International Institute for Management Development , where he worked and taught as a director of studies and professor in the fields of economics , international management and public administration . From 1968 to 1986 he was director of the institute. In 1976 he received his PhD in Economics from the University of Geneva . He also received honorary doctorates from the Universities of York University and Alberta University (both in Canada) in 1984 and 1986 .

In 1972 he was elected a member of the Club of Rome .

Bohdan Hawrylyshyn has been a speaker, moderator and chairman at international conferences and seminars in over 70 countries. He is the author of more than 100 publications on the subject of management, manager training, the political and economic environment. His report for the Club of Rome "Road Maps to the Future - Towards more effective societies" was published in 1980 and has been translated into seven languages.

After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, he worked as an advisor to various prime ministers and state presidents of Ukraine . Hawrylyshyn died three days after his 90th birthday in his Kiev apartment with his family.
