The Bolivian butterfly cichlid ( Mikrogeophagus altispinosus , syn .: Papiliochromis altispinosa ) is a freshwater ornamental fish from the family of cichlids . He lives in the area of the Río Iténez in Bolivia and in southwestern Brazil and in the Río Mamoré in Bolivia.

The Bolivian butterfly cichlid forms pairs. The male grows up to 9 cm and the female up to 7 cm. It can reach an age of 5 years. The sexes are on the second dorsal spine of the dorsal recognized. This is longer in the male than in the female. The females also often have a slight red color on their belly. Shortly before spawning, the female can be recognized by a short laying tube. The Bolivian butterfly cichlid mainly lives near the ground.
