Bombardier MultiLevel double-deck coaches (English Bombardier MultiLevel Coach , abbreviated Bombardier ML Coach ) are double-deck coaches from Bombardier Transportation for North American suburban railways, which have been built since 2006.

In contrast to the European double -decker coaches , which were originally built by Waggonbau Görlitz and are now sold under the brand name Bombardier-Doppelstockwagen , the MultiLevel Coaches are built according to the AAR standards for the North American railways. They differ in particular from European wagons in that they have a larger vehicle gauge . The car body is designed to absorb the pressure forces that are higher than European standards, which is why the openings for windows and doors are much smaller compared to European cars.

The additional doors above the bogies are designed exclusively for elevated platforms.

In contrast to the Bombardier BiLevel double-deck coaches also offered by Bombardier , the MultiLevel Coaches have a smaller clearance profile and additional entrances for elevated platforms . This enables it to be used in the tunnels leading to the downtown train stations in New York City and Montreal . The cars have two doors on each side for elevated platforms and two doors that can be used for both elevated and underground platforms. There are large standing areas at the ends of the vehicle. In the seating area there are two wide seats on both levels to the left and right of the aisle.

history

The trolleys were developed for New Jersey Transit and the Agence métropolitaine de transport in Montreal.

The first order from New Jersey Transit in 2003 consisted of 100 cars, namely 15 control cars, 37 intermediate cars with toilet and 48 intermediate cars without toilet. The first vehicles were tested at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo (Colorado) . Scheduled use began in 2006. By 2010, over 400 cars had been delivered.

MARC Train in the Baltimore – Washington Metropolitan Area took over 54 cars from an option from NJ Transit, which should be delivered in 2013.
