The Gaware Paints Bombay International 1979 (also Bombay International 1980 ) was a professional snooker invitation tournament , which was held as a round- robin tournament with a subsequent knockout system . The tournament was held from December 7th to 19th as part of the 1979/80 season in the Bombay Gymkhana in Bombay , India ; 1980 is also mentioned as the date of the event. The winner was the Englishman John Virgo , who defeated the Canadian Cliff Thorburn 13: 7 in the final. Thorburn played the highest break of the tournament with a 123 break in the final.
Prize money
As in the previous year, Gaware Paints sponsored the tournament, in comparison the total prize money increased by £ 300.

Tournament course
A total of eight players were invited to the tournament, divided into two groups of four players each. The participants included seven professional players (including three-time world champion John Spencer and several future world champions) as well as the reigning Indian amateur champion Arvind Savur , who was champion in 1975, 1978 and 1979.
Group stage
All group games were played in the best of 11 frames mode . After a total of six games, three per player, a table was calculated in which the two best-placed players made it to the final round.
