The bomb attack in Baghdad on July 3, 2016, in which official figures say 324 people lost their lives, took place in the Karrada district of Baghdad .
Sequence of events
When a car bomb exploded in a refrigerated truck shortly after midnight local time, some nearby houses and shops caught fire. At least 280 people were killed and more than 200 others injured. A large number of people were trapped in burning buildings after the explosion and burned alive. Many children were among the victims. About 50 corpses were burned in such a way that they can no longer be identified. The attack was aimed at the Shiite residents of the district, who did their shopping before the festival at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan . The IS committed itself to the act .
Another explosion in the Shiite district of Al-Shaab is said to have killed nine people and injured 11 others. So far it is unclear whether it was a bomb attack or an accident.

Reactions
A few days earlier, the terrorist attack in Istanbul on June 28, 2016 and the hostage-taking in Dhaka on July 1, 2016 . In Baghdad it was the most momentous attack of 2016 to date.
The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi appeared on the scene, but had to withdraw quickly from the angry crowd and stone throwing. The White House said it was on the side of the Iraqi people and would continue to fight IS. al-Abadi proclaimed a three-day state mourning for the victims.
Iraqi Interior Minister Mohammed al-Ghabban offered to resign after the serious attack.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the Iraqi government. He said: "We should not and do not want to rest until those behind the terror of Istanbul , Dhaka , and now Baghdad and their ideology have been defeated."
