Bonaqa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bonaqa was a drink that was sold in Germany from 1988 to 2018 and made from tap water . The Bonaqa brand is owned by the Coca-Cola Company . It was available both as table water ( Classic, Medium, Still ) and still water ( Silver ; only at McDonald’s ). Although the Bonaqua brand , an artificial word from the Latin for bona aqua - "good water", was registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) in 1997, the brand name was written in Germany as "Bonaqa". This has to do with the fact that at the time of the market entry in Germany a registered trademark was already registered with the DPMA under the name Bonaqua . The term of protection of this old Bonaqua brand - which was created by a manufacturer of devices for water treatment - expired in 2009 - 50 years after the first entry in the brand register. Another trademark with the name bonaqua was registered with the DPMA in 2003 (deleted again in 2013). The approximately thirty bottling companies for Bonaqa in Germany obtained their water from the respective municipal utilities . According to the manufacturer, the already pure water is allegedly filtered again, then enriched with minerals and finally carbonated . The bottled water produced in this way should taste the same everywhere. This water is also used in the production of all other syrup- based beverages from the Coca-Cola Group, in order to guarantee a globally consistent taste.

Since the end of the 1980s, the group has been pushing its way onto the German market, particularly through predatory competition in canteens and canteens , in order to fill this market niche as well. In the long term, Dasani should also be established as table water in Germany and become the fourth brand available worldwide (alongside Coca-Cola , Fanta and Sprite ). After it became known in Great Britain that ultimately only tap water was bottled there for Dasani, corresponding plans for Germany were dropped. Since still waters are increasingly preferred in the German market, the varieties Medium and Still were introduced as table water in 2003 and Bonaqa Silver as still mineral water in 2005 . In Germany, mostly local or regional mineral springs such as Sodenthaler Mineralbrunnen or Urbacher Mineralquellen were among the Coca-Cola bottlers. Coca-Cola European Partners Deutschland GmbH announced in October 2016 that the fountain in Urbach will be closed on June 30, 2017 and production will be discontinued.

In 2004, the flavored Bonaqa Fruits in the apple-pear and orange-pineapple varieties were introduced, followed in 2006 by the grape-kiwi variety , which, after unsatisfactory success, was replaced in spring 2007 by the lime-raspberry flavor . In 2008 the Fresh & Spice Mango-Chili and Fresh & Spice Apple-Mint varieties were introduced. In 2009 the lime-raspberry flavor was replaced by the new varieties peach -passion fruit and lemon-passion fruit .

On June 30, 2018, bottling was finally stopped and the brand was removed from the German market. Bottling in PET bottles was stopped at the end of 2017.

In Norway , Sweden , Finland and many other countries, the drink is still offered as Bonaqua or BonAqua and Bonaqua Silver with an identical or similar range from The Coca-Cola Company .
