Bondoukou is the capital of the Ivorian region of Zanzan , near the border with Ghana . Bondoukou is located in the east of the Département de Bondoukou and is also its capital. The city is known for its numerous mosques , which is why it is called La ville aux mille mosquées (City of a Thousand Mosques).

history

Originally the city was the trading center of the Dioula until it was conquered by Abra-speaking Akan groups at the beginning of the 17th century . It soon became a hub of the Gyaaman Empire. For a short time the city was in the hands of Samory Touré until it was incorporated into French West Africa in 1897 .

The Dioula traders not only brought the city to economic importance as a trading center between the gold and cola nut-producing east and the trading metropolises in the west, they also made Bondoukou an important Islamic mission base. Bondoukou is still very important in both areas today.
