Bonifaz pitcher
Bonifaz pitcher OSB , also Bonifacio Maria Krug (* 9. September 1838 in Hünfeld , Electorate of Hesse as Hermann Joseph Krug , † 4. July 1909 in Montecassino ) was an Italian Benedictine abbot of German descent.
Life
Krug came from a Protestant family in the Catholic Hessian town of Hünfeld near Fulda. In 1844 the family emigrated to the USA. There he converted to the Catholic Church, entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Vincent in Pennsylvania in 1859 and received the "Apostle of the Germans", St. Bonifatius , as patron of the order from the founder Abbot Bonifaz Wimmer , who was also from Germany . In 1860, Krug made his simple profession in St. Vincent and was ordained a priest in 1861 . In 1863, however, Krug moved to the arch- monastery of the Benedictine order founded by St. Benedict of Nursia in 529 on Monte Cassino in Italy, where he made his solemn profession in 1864. Appointed prior in 1874 , he was appointed Apostolic Visitator of the English Benedictines in 1883 because of his language skills . In 1888 he was elected and ordained abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria del Monte near Cesena . In 1895 Bonifaz Krug also became Abbot President of the Cassinese Benedictine Congregation . In 1897 the monks in the monastery of St. Benedict elected him unanimously to succeed the late Giuseppe Quandel as Archabbot of Montecassino . Archabbot Krug's outstanding service lies in the spiritual and economic reconstruction of the original Benedictine monastery after the Italian state had largely robbed it of its economic foundations.
art
Archabbot Bonifaz Krug had the lower church ( crypt ) of the monastery designed by the monk artists of the Beuron art school under the direction of Desiderius Lenz around 1900. However, Krug did not live to see their completion (around 1910) and consecration (1913). As a musician, Krug left behind several polyphonic works composed by him, the best known being Dormi, non piangere .
