Ursmar Engelmann OSB (born August 15, 1909 in Jena as Johannes Maximilian Engelmann ; † July 18, 1986 in Sigmaringen ) was a German Benedictine and eighth Archabbot of the Beuron Archabbey .

Life

Johannes Engelmann came from a family of civil servants in Jena. He first studied Protestant theology and history in Jena, Vienna and Freiburg im Breisgau, where the world of monasticism opened up to him . After completing his studies with a doctorate as Dr. phil. He converted to the Roman Catholic Church in Beuron in 1935 and entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Archabbey of St. Martin there, received the religious name Ursmar and made his profession in 1936 . On February 18, 1940 he was ordained a priest in the Abbey Church of Beuron and was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a medical officer from 1941 to 1945. After his return from captivity, he studied again in Beuron and Rome. He completed his studies with a doctoral thesis in Rome and from 1946 taught the history of ecclesiastical art and church history at the Beuron Order College . From 1947 to 1970 he also took over the management of the monastery library and from 1952 also taught patrology . Subprior in 1955, he was prior under Archabbots Benedikt Reetz and Damasus Zähringer from 1957 to 1967 and prior administrator from 1967 until the convent elected him eighth Archabbot of Beuron in 1970. In 1980 Ursmar Engelmann resigned from the office of Archabbot of the Beuron Archabbey at the age of 70. Until his death in 1986 he remained active in research and pastoral care in Beuron.

Engelmann has published over 70 books and numerous scientific articles. He was an extraordinary member of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy .
