history
The Beuron Monastery was first mentioned in 861 in the property register of the St. Gallen Monastery as "Purron". The history of the Beuron monastery begins with the establishment of an Augustinian canons' monastery in 1077. After secularization in 1802, the monastery and its territory became the property of the Princely House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . On December 6th, 1862, the foundation of Katharina von Hohenzollern enabled a new beginning of monastic life in the misappropriated buildings, some of which were used as military hospitals. For the first time a training course was set up in the monastery in 1866 under the direction of Dominican Father Hieronymus Rossi from Forli. A few years later, this home study proved to be insufficient for the increasing number of monastery entries. From 1871 to 1873 Abbot Maurus Wolter sent some of the professed clerics of Beuron to the Philosophical-Theological University of the Mainz seminary and opened a Benedictine study house there. In 1873 the decision was made to establish a local theological school with its own lecturers in Beuron. Because of the burgeoning culture war and the expulsion of the Beuron Convention, the training of the clergy took place abroad between 1875 and 1887. From 1887 monks again studied theology in Beuron .
Therefore, the west wing of the monastery was built in 1919. In it there are two auditoriums , a library , study and a clergy chapel . After the Second World War , the Bavarian and Austrian Benedictine Congregations also sent their monks to Beuron. On November 26, 1957, the administration of the state of Baden-Württemberg confirmed the existence of the university. The college had twenty-nine students in 1962 before it was converted into a dormant college in 1967.
Today the monks from Beuron study at the theological faculties in Salzburg and Rome .
