Borassodendron is a palm genus nativeto Thailand and Borneo .

features

The representatives are large, single-stemmed, unreinforced fan palms . They are dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ) and bloom several times. The trunk is upright and densely covered with leaf scars. The leaves have razor-sharp edges. The leaf blade is induplicate (the segments are V-shaped) and costapalmatically short (the clearly pronounced midrib extends a distance into the leaf blade). A clearly developed hastula sits on the upper side of the leaf, but is absent on the lower side. The fruits are big.

Borassodendron differs from the closely related genera by the following combination of characteristics: The male flowers are single or in coils of two to six. The bracts of the male inflorescences are imbricat . The thick endocarp ( stone core ) is densely hairy and has thick walls with ribs on the inside. The seeds are furrowed according to these ribs.

The number of chromosomes is unknown.

Distribution and locations

The genus occurs in southern Thailand and in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula ( Borassus machadonis ) and on Borneo ( Borassus borneense ). The former is rare and grows partly on deep soils in sandstone hill country, partly on ridges in hilly dipterocarp forest. Borassus borneense is locally common on lowland hills, but is absent in large areas with equally suitable locations.

ecology

The young leaves of Borassus borneense are eaten by orangutans , which can cause considerable damage to the palm trees. These animals may also be responsible for the spread.

Systematics

The genus Borassodendron Becc. is placed within the family Arecaceae in the subfamily Coryphoideae , Tribus Borasseae and Subtribus Lataniinae. The genus is monophyletic . Her sister group is Borassus .

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew's World Checklist of Selected Plant Families recognizes the following species:

Type species is Borassodendron machadonis (Ridl.) Becc. The name is made up of the generic name Borassus and the word dendron "tree".
