The Borasseae are a tribe of the palm family (Arecaceae).
features
The representatives of the Borasseae are always dioeciously separated sexes ( diocesan ). The leaves are palmat or costapalmat, the segments are induplicate (V-shaped folded). The male and partly the female flowers are in deep pits, which are formed by the growth of the bracts . The male flowers are rarely solitary, they are usually in coils of two to many flowers. The stamens protrude from the pit due to an elongation of the flower receptaculum . The female flowers are solitary and have two bracts. The fruits have one to three seeds with a thick, hard endocarp , the stone core .
distribution
The tribe has an ancient world distribution. The representatives occur in the areas around the Indian Ocean and on its islands.
Systematics
The Borasseae are assigned to the subfamily Coryphoideae within the Arecaceae family . The tribes as defined by Dransfield et al. (2008) is a natural kin group ( Monophylum ). Her sister group are the Corypheae .
The tribe falls into two natural groups, which are classified as subtribes:
Subtribe Hyphaeninae
In the representatives of the subtribe Hyphaeninae, male and female inflorescences are similar. The flowers of both sexes are sunk in pits. The bracts of the flowers are covered with tufts of hair. The fruits are stalked and usually single, rarely two or three seeds. The endocarp does not form a stone core.

Subtribe Lataniinae
The inflorescences of the two sexes are unequal. The flower groups of the male plants are sunk into pits. Their bracts do not have tufts of hair. The female flowers are sessile in the axilla of large, leathery bracts. The fruit is also sessile, approximately symmetrical, with one to three seeds. The endocarp forms a stone core.
