Boris Cyrulnik (born July 26, 1937 in Bordeaux ) is a French neurologist , psychiatrist and ethologist .

Life

Cyrulnik's parents moved to France from Ukraine and Poland in 1936. His father became a French soldier and was deported from captivity to Auschwitz , since the German National Socialists believed that he was a Jew. In June 1942, his mother was able to bring the son to safety in a foster family before she, too, was deported to a German extermination camp as a Jew. Cyrulnik was caught in a raid in January 1944, but escaped from the group of Jews rounded up in the synagogue of Bordeaux . After the war, he was torn between his aunt's family and his foster family. Cyrulnik was late in writing down the story of his childhood, as the "Ice Age of Words" prevented this for decades, until the conviction of the former police prefect of Bordeaux Maurice Papon in 1998.

Since 1996 he has been Director of Studies of the Faculty of Human Sciences at the Université du Sud-Toulon-Var , holder of the Chair of Ethology and head of a research group in clinical ethology at the Hospital of Toulon . Cyrulnik is best known for his work on the psychological concept of resilience .
