Borys Sabarko

Borys Mychajlowytsch Sabarko ( Ukrainian Борис Михайлович Забарко ; born November 18, 1935 in Kalininske , Kherson Oblast ) is a Ukrainian historian and president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Jewish Concentration Camp and Ghetto Survivors .

Life

Sabarko escaped as a child to the ghetto of Sharhorod . After the war he studied at the University of Chernivtsi , was a doctoral student at the Institute of History of the Academy of Science of Ukraine in Kiev , where he received his doctorate in 1971. From 1969 to 1988 he was a research fellow at the Institute for History, 1971 to 1991 a member of the Soviet-German Historians' Commission, 1989 to 2002 research fellow at the Institute for World Economy and International Relations of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .

Sabarko is the author of around 200 books and articles published in Israel, Austria, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine and Hungary. In Germany his multi-volume series on the Shoah in Ukraine and the souvenir volume Nur wir überlebt, edited by him, were published by Dittrich Verlag. He is also the initiator of documentaries on anti-Semitic writings and violent crimes in Ukraine.

Since 1998 he has been director of the Institute for Social Workers and Community Aid and since 2004 President of the Ukrainian Association of Jewish Former Prisoners of Ghettos and National Socialist Concentration Camps . On October 21, 2009, he was the seventh Ukrainian to be awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon. Borys Sabarko lives in Kiev .
