Amphoe Ko Lanta ( Thai : อำเภอ เกาะลันตา ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the south of Krabi Province . Krabi Province is located in the southern region of Thailand , about 810 km south of Bangkok .

Ko Lanta is also the name of a double island in the Strait of Malacca .

Ko Lanta consists of two islands, both of which are part of the "Mu Ko Lanta National Park" ( อุทยานแห่งชาติ หมู่ เกาะลันตา ). They are called "Lanta Yai" ( เกาะลันตา ใหญ่ , large Lanta , with an extension of about 27 km in length and 12-15 km in width) and "Lanta Noi" ( เกาะลันตา น้อย , little Lanta ). Ko Lanta Noi in the north is separated from Ko Lanta Yai in the south by a natural sea waterway about one kilometer wide. While Lanta Noi is almost uninhabited, Lanta Yai is well developed for tourism.

Demographics

Ko Lanta Yai has a population of around 20,000, mostly Muslim fishermen. Around 4% of the population are merchants of Chinese descent, around 1% belong to the Moken ethnic group , who are often referred to as "sea gypsies". In addition to their main livelihood, fishing, the residents also breed cattle, cultivate rice and cultivate coconut and rubber plantations.

history

Ko Lanta County was established in December 1901.

The origin of the name is unclear, possibly it comes from the Javanese word Lantas , which means a kind of fish grill. In 1917 the district was officially named "Ko Lanta".

Local administration

Ko Lanta Yai ( เทศบาล ตำบล เกาะลันตา ใหญ่ ) is a small town ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district, it consists of parts of the Tambon Ko Lanta Yai.

There are also five “tambon administration organizations” (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ) for the tambon or the parts of tambon in the county that do not belong to any town.
