The Borkum Riff nature reserve in Lower Saxony is located in the 12 nautical mile zone of the North Sea in the area where the Ems flows into the open North Sea . It is located about 20 km northwest of the East Frisian island of Borkum in the Ballonplate and Geldsackplate area and thus directly on the area of ​​the border between Germany and the Netherlands ( Ems-Dollart Treaty ), which has not been finally determined here .

The nature reserve was placed under nature protection by ordinance of August 26, 1984. The protected area bears the statistical label NSG WE 276 and covers an area of ​​10,000 hectares. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) .

The nature reserve is a marine area with water depths of 3 to 25 meters. Due to the confluence of differently warm and salty water masses, a nutritional abundance is generated which favors an increased fish density. The protection is intended to ensure that the marine area in its function as feeding, wintering, migration and resting area is preserved, especially for birds.

Namesake

In the 1960s, the Danish pipe tobacco brand Borkum Riff was introduced worldwide. It belongs to the Scandinavian Tobacco Group .
