Born Dead Violent Demise: The Last Days

Born Dead is the second studio album by the US crossover formation Body Count , first released in 1994 by Rhyme $ yndicate Productions and later by Virgin Records . For the follow-up to the controversial debut album Body Count , the band once again uses an aggressive mix of hardcore rap and heavy metal . The album also sold well internationally, although the lack of creativity was sometimes criticized in the trade press.

background

After the band's first album, Body Count , and the song on it, Cop Killer, led to heavy criticism and ultimately to the withdrawal of the album and a new release, the record label Warner Music Group separated from the controversial band. Ice-T then looked for a new record company and, after unsuccessful search, founded his own company Rhyme $ yndicate Productions, with which he produced the album Born Dead and released it in 1994.

Musically, the band again relied on an aggressive crossover style of hardcore rap and heavy metal , unlike the previous version, however, there was no provocation like Cop Killer . As an additional ballad, a cover version of the song Hey Joe was added to the album, which the band had already recorded in 1993 as a contribution to the tribute compilation album Stone Free (A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix) .

Born Dead was able to establish itself internationally as the follow-up album to Body Count and entered the charts in the United States as well as in various European countries. On the Billboard 200 , the album was ranked 74th and was in the charts for three weeks. Born Dead entered the German album charts on September 12, 1994 and rose to number 5, where it lasted for two weeks. It stayed in the charts for a total of 21 weeks. In the Swiss charts, the album came to number 50 on September 25, 1994, rose to number 44 the following week and then left the Top 100. The album made it to number 15 in the British charts, but stayed only two weeks in the Top 100.

However, some media denied the album's creativity and novelty. Laut.de describes the album after the refreshing debut as an infusion of the same and only convinces die-hard fans of the gangster clique. Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote in a short review on allmusic.com: "All of the controversy over" Cop Killer "and Body Count's debut obscured one important fact - they're not a very good band. Born Dead makes that clear by replicating all of Body Count - all of the plodding riffs, embarrassing singing, obvious attempts at social commentary, and the relentless "Body Count, Body Count, Body Count, BC, BC, BC" chants. All that's missing is humor. Not even the worst material on Born Dead is unintentionally funny; it's just embarrassing. Ice-T can pull this material off live; on record, his band just sounds like a heavy metal relic from the late '80s.
