Carnivore is the seventh studio album by the US crossover formation Body Count , which was released by Century Media in 2020 and produced by Body Count together with Will Putney .
background
Carnivore was released in 2020, three years after the last album Bloodlust . As with this and its predecessor Manslaughter , the line-up consisted of the two founding members Ice-T and Ernie C (guitar) as well as bassist Vincent Price, guitarist Juan of the Dead and drummer Will Ill.
For the album, the band again relied on their well-known and often criticized crossover style of hardcore rap and heavy metal . Laut.de describes the music as follows: “Musically, Body Count only changed the success formula of their modern masterpiece" Bloodlust "in nuances. The sound is harder, gimmicks have been cut back. Extended guitar solos like in "Point the Finger" remain the exception. Instead, Ice-T's roaring rap is in the foreground. Even if you don't understand the lyrics, you can feel the anger. ”The album also features several guest musicians from well-known rock and metal bands with Jamey Jasta from Hatebreed , Amy Lee from Evanescence and Riley Gale from Power Trip . A cover version of the song Ace of Spades by Motörhead is included, which begins with a spoken tribute to the late singer Lemmy Kilmister (Rest in Peace). The song When I'm Gone , in which Amy Lee took over the singing voice, Ice-T also wrote for the rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was murdered in 2019 . With Colors 2020, there is also a cover version of the rap song Colors by Ice-T from 1988.

Like its predecessor, Carnivore was internationally successful and featured in several national charts, but did not make it into the American Billboard 200 . In Germany, on the other hand, the album rose to number 5 in the German album charts and was able to stay in the charts for three weeks. In Switzerland the album rose to number 10 and was also in the charts for three weeks, and in Austria it rose to number 8 and stayed in the charts for two weeks.
Like its predecessor Bloodlust , Carnivore was much more convincing in the media than their previous albums, but again the innovation was missed. According to Laut.de, "[the album] bangs just as well as" Bloodlust ". However, there is no surprise effect. In addition, the plate lacks meat. Fans only get 28 minutes of fresh music. ”The Visions describes the album in a similar way . She describes it as a “dizygoti twin to the predecessor Bloodlust”. They sum up the concept: “And what can I say: Ice-T's calculation works out, because Body Count finally found a sound and a production, just like on the predecessor, that no longer makes them sound like a funk band that now they should play metal [...] but like a real metal band. "At the same time they write:" On this slide, Body Counts stubborn refusal to change anything musically is perhaps the most consistent thing they can do and less materialistic than expected : The band counteracts social stagnation by recording their first album again and again until something finally changes. "
