Manslaughter is the fifth studio album by the US crossover formation Body Count , released in 2014 on Sumerian Records and produced by Will Putney . After the unsuccessful album Murder 4 Hire and the death of three founding members, two band members were exchanged again, making it the first album with guitarist Juan of the Dead and drummer Will Ill.

background

Manslaughter was released in 2014, eight years after the last album Murder 4 Hire . Only Ice-T and guitarist Ernie C remained as founding members of the band , plus bassist Vincent Price , who was already active with Murder 4 Hire, and guitarist Juan of the Dead and drummer Will Ill as new members . The band was after the failure of Murder 4 Hire some years inactive and played until 2009 as part of the Vans Warped Tour, a show with NOFX , Pennywise and Rise Against , while the thrash metal -Song Raining Blood by Slayer cover versions and finally her controversial Cop killer played. Then the band took part in the 2011 computer game Gears of War 3 .

On this album, too, they continued their well-known and often criticized crossover style of hardcore rap and heavy metal . The album includes a body count version of the song 99 Problem in two versions, originally by Ice-T and released on his album Home Invasion in 1993 and later sampled by rapper Jay-Z and taken up again here. In the Body Count version, the song is given the rock sound of the band, the first verse is rapped by Ice-T without accompaniment. Another cover version is Institutionalized as Institutionalized 2014 , originally by Suicidal Tendencies .

Manslaughter was not very successful internationally, but unlike its predecessor Murder 4 Hire , it entered the German album charts as well as the American Billboard 200 . It was listed at number 102 on the Billboard charts on June 28, 2014, but only stayed there for a week. In Germany, the album only stayed in the charts for a week, where it reached number 92 in the Top 100.

Unlike the previous album Murder 4 Hire , which in retrospect was referred to as an "artistic low point", the reviews on Manslaughter were more differentiated. Allmusic.com still criticized the creativity and wrote: “At this stage, Body Count haven't changed much, and really aren't likely to. […] However, if you weren't sold on these guys in the first place, this album isn't likely to change your mind. ”(“ At this point in time, Body Counts haven't changed much, and probably won't either change a lot. […] However, if you weren't enthusiastic about these guys from the start, this album probably won't change your mind. ”) That is also the assessment of Jon Hadusek on consequenceofsound.net:“ Body Count doesn't seem interested in being a novelty of the past. Rather, Manslaughter, their fifth studio album and first since 2006's Murder 4 Hire, embraces the controversy and Slayer-inspired acerbity that made the debut so provocative in the first place, and that's clear from opener “Talk Shit, Get Shot”. "( "Body Count doesn't seem interested in being a novelty of the past. Rather, Manslaughter , their fifth studio album and first since 2006 Murder 4 Hire , addresses the controversy and Slayer- inspired sharpness that made their debut in the first place provocative, and that becomes clear with the opener, Talk Shit, Get Shot '. ”For him, Manslaughter is the most lyrically and musically inspired work since their debut album. Laut.de is also positive about the album. The “unmistakability of the brutal sound that was once defined by classics like 'Body Count's In The House' or 'Cop Killer'” is emphasized here as a unique feature. In the new album “Body Count in 2014 sound instrumentally more like tight Metalcore than like the crossover of the early nineties. "
