history
The name Borongan is derived from the Waray-Waray word borong for fog.
The people along the east coast of Samar were called Ibabao in pre- Hispanic times .
Seventy-five years after Ferdinand Magellan's landed in Homonhom in Eastern Samar, Spanish Jesuits began evangelizing the entire island of Samar. The first mission stations were established in Tinago . The missionary activity gradually reached Palapag, a place on the east coast of Samar.
Borongan was officially founded on September 8, 1619 as pueblo .
On March 15, 2007 Borongan received the status of a "City" ( Component City ). The "LEAGUE OF CITIES OF THE PHILIPPINES" sued this decision. On November 18, 2008, the Supreme Court ruled that the decision was unlawful and Borongan was restored to municipality status. On December 22nd, 2009, the Supreme Court reversed the decision, whereby Borongan was again given the status of a "City". On August 24, 2010, the Supreme Court suspended the ruling of November 18, 2008, causing Borongan to lose its "City" status.
In the mayoral election on May 10, 2010, the duo Fe Abunda and Fidel Anacta (previously mayor) managed to win the elections for mayor and deputy mayor through massive vote buying.
