Botrydium is a genus of algae from the family of Botrydiaceae within the yellow-green algae (Xanthophyceae).

distribution

Botrydium species live in the floodplain of standing and flowing water , as well as in moist fields and similar locations. They are typical bottom-dwelling algae.

description

Botrydium forms a relatively large, multinucleated siphonoblast ; when the nucleus divides , no cell or protoplast division takes place, and no dividing cell walls are formed. The siphonoblast is surrounded by a common cell wall. These are 1 to 3 mm large, green bubbles that are anchored in the ground with a rhizoid system and stand together in groups. There is a large vacuole inside . They have a cytoplasmic wall layer with many plastids and numerous cell nuclei . The surface of the bubbles is often covered with lime scale. Reserve carbohydrates are stored in the cytoplasm.

Reproduction

In the event of flooding, the vegetative reproduction takes place as the plasmatic wall covering transforms into flagellated spores ( zoospores ) with two flagella of different lengths. When it is dry, it is transformed into uncultivated spores ( aplanospores ). The existence of sexual reproduction is controversial.

species

The genus Botrydium currently comprises 13 species. (As of February 2018)
