Botryobasidium croceum is a mushroom species from the family of grape basidia relatives (Botryobasidiaceae). It forms resupinate, cobweb-like fruiting bodies thatgrowon dead wood . Botryobasidium croceum has a species range that includes North America, South America and West Africa. The anamorphic of the species is known under the name Haplotrichum croceum .
features
Macroscopic features
Botryobasidium croceum has light to light pink, sand-colored, spider-like fruiting bodies that grow resupinate (i.e. completely adjacent) on their substrate and appear slightly reticulate under the magnifying glass.
Microscopic features
As with all grape basidia , the hyphae structure of Botryobasidium croceum is monomitic , i.e. it only consists of generative hyphae that branch out at right angles. The basal hyphae are hyaline , mostly 7.5–11 µm wide and not encrusted. The up to 12.5 µm thick subhymenial hyphae are hyaline , short-celled, thin-walled and cyanophilic. The species does not have cystids or buckles . The two- to six-pore basidia of the species grow in nests, are 12.5–17.5 × 8.5–12.5 µm in size, are initially spherical, later pear- to egg-shaped and simply septate at the base. The spores are extremely variable in shape and 8–12 × 4.5–6 µm in size. They are smooth and thin-walled and have a distinct extension.
distribution
The known distribution of Botryobasidium croceum includes southern North America , the Caribbean , South America and western Africa .
ecology
Botryobasidium croceum is a saprobiont that colonizes dead wood . The exact substrate spectrum of this grape base is not known.
