The Boumba-Bek National Park is a national park in the extreme southeast of Cameroon . The park belongs to the eastern province of the country.

history

The Wildlife Conservation Society was initially active from 1988 to 1995 in the Lobéké National Park , which is also in southeast Cameroon. The observations made by the WCS made the WWF and GTZ aware of the Boumba-Bek and Nki regions. Since 1995 the WWF has been active in the southeast of the country with the help of the GEF and its own money funds.

GTZ went to the Boumba-Bek area in three phases. The first phase began in 1996–1999. The second phase ran from 1999 to 2002 and finally the third phase from 2002 to 2005.

In 1994 Cameroon passed new, stricter forest laws. In 1995 the area was as Essential protection zone designated (Essential Protection Zone).

The new nature parks established in Cameroon in 1995 did not take into account the needs of their indigenous people. The victims of nature conservation were the pygmy peoples of the Baka , Bagando , Bakwele , Knombemebe , Vonvo , Zime , Dabjui , Bagyeli and Bakola as well as the Mbendjele Yaka , nomads who roam between the north of Congo-Brazzaville and southeastern Cameroon.

Cameroon, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo are currently working on a so-called TRIDOM project. The aim is to create a trinational and thus transnational zone. Part of the integration project are the Minkébé (Gabon), the Boumba-Bek (Cameroon), the Nki- (Cameroon) and the Odzala National Park (Republic of the Congo) and the Dja Wildlife Reserve (Cameroon). Forest corridors connect Ivindo and Mwagne national parks in Gabon.

Since April 18, 2006, the Boumba-Bek National Park has been on the list of proposals for UNESCO World Heritage .

geography

Due to its remoteness in southeast Cameroon, the park was able to preserve its originality. The park is located at an altitude between 380 and 600 meters above sea level.

The park belongs to the Sangha ecoregion. Several large rivers flow through the park. To the east of the reserve is the Boumba River . There is also the Bek River , which explains the name of the park. The mighty Dja also flows through the park.

The park lies between latitude 2˚09 and 2˚20 north and longitude 15˚35 to 15˚50 east. The area covers an area of 2383 km².

The closest smaller towns to the Boumba-Bek Reserve are Yokadouma and Moloundou in Boumba-et-Ngoko Province .

In the forest there are at least 16 salt pans , the Bais. Four of the salt pans are under constant surveillance. They are known for their high number of game movements, as the Bais contain minerals that are very popular with animals.

population

Small groups of pygmies live within the reserve . They belong to the Baka ethnic group . Their share in the population is around 20%. The majority of the residents are Bantu . Their share is around 70%. The remaining 10% are of “ outsider ” origin. They have often settled there for commercial reasons (workers from timber companies, state employees, migrant workers from Mali , Senegal and Mauritania ).

biodiversity

flora

Since the Boumba-Bek is not very populated, it has kept its originality. It consists mainly of lowland rainforest. The forest is under a canopy of evergreen . One of the tree species in the park is the mighty moabi ( Baillonella toxisperma )
