The Bénoué National Park is a national park in the northern province of Cameroon . The park takes its name from the Benue River , which flows through the park. The park is considered the second largest game reserve in Cameroon after the Waza National Park .

history

In 1932 the area was declared a fauna reserve. In 1968 it was converted into a national park . In 1982 the park was recognized as a biosphere reserve .

geography

The Bénoué National Park

The Bénoué National Park is located in the Guinea savannah belt, a wet savannah between the cities of Garoua in the north and Ngaoundéré in the south. The park is bounded in the east by the Bénoué River and in the west largely by the trunk road N1 and the Mayo Salo river. It is about 50 kilometers long and up to 25 kilometers wide. It ends about 15 kilometers south of the Lagdo reservoir .

The park has a variety of rocky knolls, woodland and some bodies of water. In the middle of the park there are smaller salt pans and mineral-rich soils.

The rocky sections at Hosséré Gorna in the north of the park are between 600 and 750 meters above sea level, the plains between 250 and 500 meters. The entire park extends over an area of around 1800 km².

climate

With an annual rainfall of around 800 to 1200 mm, water shortages can occur in the dry season from November to May .

biodiversity

flora

The dry Sudan zone dominates the park's flora. Dry forests of Anogeissus leiocarpa are widespread . One of the trees found here is Afzelia africana .

fauna

Mammals

Numerous wild animals live on the banks of the Bénoué. The park is best known for its herds of hippos , which prefer to come ashore at night to graze. The elephant is another pachyderm one that, with a little luck, can be seen in the park. Baboons can be found among the park's primates . Particularly endangered species such as the African wild dog ( Lycaon pictus ), the African manatee ( Trichechus senegalensis ) and the giant eland ( Taurotragus derbianus ) also live in the Bénoué National Park . The bushbuck ( Tragelaphus scriptus ) , which also lives in the park, is less endangered . A more detailed study of the development of the Kob ( Kobus kob ) in the Bénoué National Park was carried out in 2001. Lions , leopards , lyre antelopes , waterbuck and buffalo are also found here.

Birds

The park is a paradise for ornithologists . An inventory by BirdLife International revealed at least 306 different bird species, including the red- eared shrike ( Lanius gubernator ), the beautiful shrub ( Estrilda caerulescens ), the red-masked tiger ( Pytilia hypogrammica ) and the little spotted amaranth ( Lagonosticta rufopicta ). The Adamaua pigeon ( Streptopelia hypopyrrha ) and the crepuscular bat ( Macheiramphus alcinus ) are at home in the park.

Herpetofauna

Among the reported amphibians are the Maskarenenfrosch ( Ptychadena mascareniensis ), the tremolo sand frog ( Tomopterna cryptotis ) and the winning bullfrog ( Hoplobatrachus occipital ).
