The Mbam Djerem National Park is a national park in Cameroon , which extends over the three provinces of Adamawa , Center and Est extends.

history

In March 1999, the forestry zone of the Mban and Djerem was designated as a protected zone by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry by decree 0373 / D / MINEF / DAG. On January 6, 2000, the area was expanded again according to Decree 2000/005 / PM. Finally, in 2000, the largest national park in Cameroon was created. This was officially announced in November 2000 by Ministerial Decree 1391 / MINEF / DFAP / SA / FB.

geography

Mbam Djerem National Park is located between the southern slopes of the Adamaua Plateau and the northern tip of a dense depression in the rainforest in the Congo Basin . To the east of the reserve is the Yoko to Tibati road .

The park is part of the regional Guinea-Congo / Sudan transition zone.

The entire park extends over an area of ​​around 4165 km². The area is at an altitude between 600 and 900 meters above sea level.

Two great rivers flow through the park. The park takes its name from them. The Djérem River stretches from north to south. The 425-kilometer-long Mbam River also paves its way from north to south. While the Djérem flows through the eastern part of the reserve, the Mbam is in the western part of the national park.

The habitat of the national park is complex. In the park you can find typical lowland rainforest , wooded landscape, wooded savannah and grass savannah. The terrain is rather flat and dry. Satellite images show that most of the plants are no more than 50 years old.

fauna

The southern pygmy monkey ( Miopithecus talapoin ) is found among the primates on the Djerem River . Another primate in the park is the chimpanzee . Other mammals that are native to the park are the leopard , forest elephant , cape buffalo and the bongo .

The park is interesting for ornithologists . An inventory by BirdLife International revealed at least 365 different bird species. These include the Lathamfrankolin ( Francolinus lathami ), the pearl rail ( Sarothrura pulchra ), the fox falcon ( Falco alopex ) and the chestnut lily ( Halcyon badia ). The ring star ( Grafisia torquata ) and the Bamendafeiner ( Apalis bamendae ) are endangered .

The Mbam is habitat for fish such as MBAM Killie ( Aphyosemion dargei ), stripes-Killie ( Aphyosemion bualanum (lowland savannah form)) and ( Aphyosemion bualanum (yellow)).
