The Bouba Njida National Park is a national park in the Northern Province of Cameroon , which to save the black rhino and the giant eland was established.

history

In 1932 the area of ​​Bouba-Ndjida was declared a fauna reserve. In 1947 the park was classified as a forest reserve. In 1968 it was converted into a national park . In December 2007, the national parks of Sena-Oura (Chad) and Bouba-Ndjida (Cameroon) were agreed as a cross-border biosphere reserve . The park belongs to IUCN category II.

Geography, geology and climate

The Bouba Ndjida National Park borders on Chad . Together with the Sena Oura National Park on the Chad side, the area is considered a bi-national national park. The main entrance to the park is in Koum about 45 kilometers east of Tchollire. The area is located on the banks of the Mayo Lidi River. The landscape is characterized by craggy rocks made of granite and gneiss .

The entire park extends over an area of ​​around 2200 km². The area is between 350 and 900 meters above sea level. The annual precipitation is 1200 mm.

Near the Bouba-Ndjida, between the Bénoué National Park, 90 kilometers away, and Bouba-Ndjida, there is an adobe palace built between 1805 and 1808 called Rey-Bouba, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The park takes its name from an ancestor of today's Baba (≈Sultan) Abdoulaye. This was called Bouba N'Djida and settled in the area from Mali in 1799 .

Fossils

Paleontologists found in the park dinosaurs - fossils . Similar to the spatially close and better-known fossils from Manangia in the same Department Mayo-Rey, discovered in 1988, they are around 120 million years old.

The park consists mainly of open forest and bush savannah. Parts of the savannah contain elements of the Sahel zone . The flora consists of dense scrub and woody grassy landscape.

fauna

According to a study by tacking & Esser from 1979 found in the park Eland ( Taurotragus oryx ) at a density of 0.44 Eland / km². Today, the number of rare animals is estimated at 1,000 to 3,500. Other species of antelope in the park are the red hartebeest ( Alcelaphus buselaphus ), the roan antelope ( Hippotragus equinus ), the goby antelope , the waterbuck , the bleaching ram and various duikers . You can also find the black rhinoceros ( Diceros bicornis ) in the park . In addition to giraffes , there should be cheetahs . According to another study exist in the reserve a population of 30 to 50 lions and 41 to 100 hyenas. Elephants and Cape buffalo should also be present in the park. From January to March 2012, at least 500 elephants are said to have been killed by poachers.

In addition to mammals can be found with luck kinixys ( Kinixys belliana belliana ), the ptyodactylus Gecko ( Ptyodactylus hasselquisti ), the colorful Togoskink ( Mabuya perroteti ) or ball python ( Python regius ).
