The Mozogo-Gokoro National Park is a national park in the province of Extrême-Nord in Cameroon .

location

With only 17.23 km² the national park is relatively small. The closest town to the park is Maroua , which is about 25 kilometers away. The area belongs to the Sahel zone and is located in the lower regions at altitudes between 430 to 641 meters near the Koza Pass. The park borders the Mandara Plateau .

history

The Mozogo-Gokoro was declared a nature reserve as early as 1932. After Cameroon gained independence in 1961, a form of nature conservation was only established in Eastern Cameroon. In 1968 the East Cameroonian Ministry of Agriculture declared the park a national park. The park is not open to the public and is mainly used for scientific purposes. However, the government has plans to open the park to tourism.

It has been forbidden to start fires in this area since 1958. As a result of this measure, a dense forest with impenetrable dry bushes was formed. The grassy areas have been almost completely eliminated. The forest area is dominated by Anabäimen ( Faidherbia albida ), Verek acacias ( Acacia senegal ) and fragrant acacias ( Acacia nilotica ). Other occurring trees are Wüstendatteln ( Balanites aegyptiaca ) Crateva adansonii to the genus of nettle trees belonging Celtis integrifolia , different kinds of figs ( Fiscus ), various species of the genus Ziziphus and the mahogany plants belonging Khaya senegalensis .

In the park were u. a. Occurrences of Ethiopian Vervet monkeys ( Chlorocebus aethiops ), patas monkey ( Erythrocebus patas ) baboons ( Papio anubis ), desert Warzenschweine ( phacochoerus aethiopicus ) Bushbucks ( Tragelaphus scriptus ), crown Ducker ( Sylvicapra grimmia ) and Northern rock pythons ( Python sebae ) detected. The African wild dog ( Lycaon pictus ) found in the park is endangered . The endangered ( Vulnerable ) animals in the park include cheetahs ( Acinonyx jubatus ), red-fronted gazelles ( Eudorcas rufifrons ) and lions ( Panthera leo ).
