Ziziphus is a genus from the family of the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). It comprises around 100 species and can be found almost worldwide in the tropics . Centers of diversity are tropical America and Southeast Asia .

Vegetative characteristics

The Ziziphus species are evergreen or deciduous, upright or creeping, often climbing shrubs or small to medium-sized trees. The leaves are clearly three-veined, rarely pinnate-veined and arranged alternately. Their stipules are often prickly.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in axillary, umbrella- like cymes or as terminal or axillary thyrses . The flower cup is flat hemispherical to bowl-shaped. The fleshy, flat disc is five to ten lobed. Unlike in many genera of the family, petals are usually present. The two to three, rarely fourfold ovary is on top. The fruits are two to three, rarely single-compartment drupes with a stone core.

Systematics

The genus was first described by Philip Miller in 1754 . Within the buckthorn family , the genus is classified in the tribe Paliureae . The genus Ziziphus comprises around 100 species.
