Paliureae are a tribe in the family of buckthorn plants (Rhamnaceae), to which three genera are assigned. Representatives of the tribes grow in the tropics and in warm-temperate areas of the Old and New World.

description

The representatives of the tribe are reinforced and unreinforced trees or bushes. The leaves are alternate or tufted. The leaf veins are arranged in the shape of a hand or, in the case of the genus Hovenia , three- veined at the base with a feathery central vein. The stipules are permanent or soon fall off. The inflorescences are axillary or terminal umbels , the inflorescence axis is succulent in members of the genus Hovenia . Petals are mostly present. The ovary is semi-subordinate to above and usually two, more rarely three or fourfold. The discus secretes nectar, is fused with the ovary and the flower cup and is hairy in Hovenia . The stylus is two or three columns. The fruits of the genus Paliurus are dry and form a wide, membranous ring, in the genus Ziziphus they are fleshy drupes and in Hovenia they are dry, non-opening capsules on a fleshy stem.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12, 24, 26, 26, 40, 48 and 72.

distribution

The representatives of the tribes grow in the tropics of the Old and New World and in warm-temperate areas from southern Europe to Japan.
