Hovenia is a genus from the family of the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). It includes seven species native to East Asia.

description

Hovenia are deciduous, unreinforced shrubs or small trees. The leaves are long-stalked and arranged alternately.

The flowers are in terminal or axillary, three- to many-flowered cymes . The flower cup is inverted-cone to bowl-shaped. The fleshy, flat disc , which fills the flower cup, is covered in felt hair. The triple ovary is semi-subordinate. The fruits are more or less fleshy nuts with three seeds. At the time of fruiting, the inflorescence axis and pedicel become juicy and fleshy.

Distribution and systematics

The Hovenia comprise seven species, all in East Asia. The genus was first described by Carl Peter Thunberg in 1781 . Within the buckthorn family , it is classified in the tribe Paliureae . The types include:

Hovenia acerba Lindl. : It occurs in India, Bhutan, Nepal and China.
Hovenia tomentella (Makino) Nakai : It occurs in Japan.
Hovenia trichocarpa Chun & Tsiang

Name declaration

The genus Hovenia is named after a Dutch senator David ten Hoven (1724–1787) who supported Thunberg's trip.
