Paliurus is a genus from the family of the Buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae). It comprises five species that are mostly native to East Asia.

description

Paliurus are evergreen or deciduous, often thorn-bearing shrubs or small to medium-sized trees. The leaves are clearly three-veined and arranged alternately.

The flowers are in axillary cymes . The flower cup is hemispherical to bowl-shaped. The fleshy disc is fused with the intrastaminal surface of the flower cup. The two to three-way ovary is semi-subordinate. The fruits are dry and have a membranous, disc- to hemispherical wing, they do not open themselves.

Distribution and systematics

Within the buckthorn family , the genus is classified in the tribe Paliureae . The Paliurus include five species, four in East Asia and one in the Mediterranean.
