Boumia ( Arabic بومية, Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⴱⵓⵎⵢⴰ ) is a small town in the Middle Atlas, mainly inhabited by Berbers, with around 10,000 inhabitants, which - together with the villages in the surrounding area - still has the status of a rural community ( commune rurale ) with a total of around 18,500 inhabitants, in the Province Midelt in the region Drâa Tafilalet .

location

Boumia is located on the upper reaches of the Oued Moulouya about 52 km (driving distance) west of Midelt or about 40 km northwest of Jbel Ayachi , the highest mountain in the region at 3747 m. The winter rains are comparatively high for Morocco. The night-time temperatures often reach values below 0 ° C in winter; During the day they usually rise to values around 10 ° C. In summer there is hardly any rain and the daytime temperatures sometimes rise to over 30 °.

The majority of the population consists of immigrant Berbers from the villages of the Middle Atlas; they speak the regional Berber dialect and Moroccan Arabic. After the winter rains, the largely agriculturally used landscape around Boumia is green and fertile; However, that changes with the increasing drought in March and April. Today the inhabitants of the constantly growing city live from handicrafts, trade and services of all kinds. Tourism hardly plays a role.

history

As is usual in the Berber regions, no information about the earlier history of the place has been preserved. It is likely to have already been of interest to prehistoric hunters and gatherers and later semi-nomads ( transhumants ); a first permanent settlement was established between 1000 and 1500 years ago. Every year (most recently in February 2010 and December 2012) the Oued Moulouya briefly overflows its banks and causes considerable damage in the city.

Attractions

The place, which was mainly built in the second half of the 20th century, consists of the typical houses made of hollow blocks with concrete beams and ceilings, the ground floor of which is used as a warehouse, garage or shop.
