Run of the Oued Moulouya in Morocco

The Moulouya (also called Wadi al-Muluyah and Mulwija ; Arabic نهر ملوية, DMG Nahr Mulwīya ) is an approximately 550 km long river in the north African Morocco . It is the largest river on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco.

course

The Oued Moulouya is formed from several source rivers in the geographical center of northern Morocco in the area where the Middle Atlas and High Atlas meet in the village of Tounfite, southwest of the small town of Boumia at an altitude of approx. 1800  m . During its course, it largely separates the Middle Atlas mountain range in the west from the Schotts highlands and the Tellatlas mountain range in the east. After its predominantly northeast-facing course, it flows into the western Mediterranean about 300 km east-southeast of the Strait of Gibraltar between the coastal cities of Ras el Ma (Ras Kebdana) in the northwest and Saidia in the southeast .

Hydrometry

The flow rate of the river was measured for 31 years (1957–1988) at the Dar el Caid gauge, 127 km above the mouth in m³ / s.

history

In ancient times, under the name Mulucha or Malva, it formed the border river between the Roman provinces of Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Caesariensis ; this border remained in place until 1830 and was only moved about 25 km to the east by the French. During the time of the Rif Republic (1921–1926) the Moulouya formed its eastern border, with cities belonging to Morocco such as Oujda and Saidia being excluded and also remaining under French control during the Spanish protectorate .

Nature reserve

The approximately 2700 hectare estuary of the Moulouya is a bird sanctuary , but its continued existence is threatened by the entry of chemicals from agriculture, industry and private households.
