The Bouvet was a sailing and steam Aviso of the French Navy . It was named after the French admiral François Joseph Bouvet (1753-1832) and became known as an opponent of the German gunboat Meteor during the naval battle off Havana in 1870 when the Franco-Prussian War broke out . It was the only French warship that was involved in a naval battle during this war.

The Bouvet was lost on September 17, 1871, when she stranded on a reef off the Île à Vache .
