Boveney is a village in Buckinghamshire , England and is near Windsor .

The name of the village comes from Old English and means 'over the island'. This name refers to the location of the place in relation to the nearby island in the Thames . The Anglo-Saxon name for the village was Bufanege .

Boveney was once a hamlet belonging to the Parish of Burnham but has long been considered a village in its own right, especially since the growth of Slough , which is very close by. The place became an independent civil parish in 1866 . From 1894 to 1934, Boveney was part of the Eton Rural District . The parish of Boveney was dissolved in 1934 as a result of a County Review Order , with the more populated parts of Boveney Eton and the larger, less populated remainder came to Dorney .

St Mary Magdalene Church, Boveney

St Mary Magdalene's Church is in a remote part of the village on the banks of the Thames. It is a listed building and has been used in the past as the setting for a number of great films that were filmed at Bray Studios . Scenes from the episode Silent World of the television series Inspector Morse and Robin Hood - King of Thieves with Kevin Costner were also filmed here. In the 1970s, the church became redundant and in 1983 it was transferred to the Friends of Friendless Churches , who repair and maintain it so that visitors and residents can continue to enjoy the building.

The Boveney Lock , which the place gives its name, is further downstream in the Thames.
