Boy Better Know

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boy Better Know ( BBK ) is a British grime collective and record label . It was founded in 2005 in North London by the two brothers Joseph and Jamie Adenuga, better known by their stage names Skepta and JME .

history

In the early 2000s, the members of the Meridian Crew - including Skepta, Jme, President T and Big H - appeared regularly on British pirate channels such as Heat FM or later Déjá VU FM. In 2005, the crew disbanded after several members were charged with murder. After switching to Crew Roll Deep , JME and Skepta Boy founded Better Know. Other members of the former Meridian Crew formed a collective called the Bloodline Family.

Together with the former Roll Deep member DJ Maximum, the two brothers had a regular program on the pirate channel Rinse FM. Skepta's first album Greatest Hits was released in 2007, the debut album Famous. by JME was released in 2008. The label released one or two more albums and numerous EPs each year. The best-known releases include the two debut albums by Skepta and JME, Microphone Champion by Skepta from 2009 and JME's Integrity> from 2015. Other albums from the BBK catalog come from the artists Frisco, Jammer, Shorty and Wiley .

In 2014, Skepta released the video for the single That's Not Me on a budget of £ 80. The video won the Mobo Award . His album Konnichiwa entered the British album charts at number 2 in May 2016 and received the Mercury Prize . The Canadian rapper Drake announced shortly after the release of Skeptas Konnichiwa that he had signed a record deal with BBK and that there were plans for an international BBK network. After these events and the publications of other grime rappers such as Stormzy or Wiley, 2016 was described by many music media as the “year of grime”.

In 2017, JME met for a video interview with UK Prime Minister candidate Jeremy Corbyn as part of the UK general election in 2017 .

As part of the #grimeforcorbyn campaign, other rappers expressed their support for the Labor candidate. As a result, Corbyn was listed as a member of the crew by a British Wikipedia user. After the election, Skepta addressed his skepticism towards Corbyn in a Guardian interview: “Do you know why grime exists? Because of the pain they put us through, 'he says of politicians in general. That makes me sick. Everyone said 'choose my man'. I ignore them, I laugh at them. "

At the Glastonbury Festival 2017, the BBK Crew headlined the Other Stage. At the Boy Better Know Takeover event curated by the collective, artists such as A $ AP Rocky and J Hus will perform in the O2 Arena in London on August 27, 2017 .

During its early days, BBK was best known for the T-shirts that JME designed itself. The production of the merchandising gave the crew the opportunity to produce music and videos on their own. With the telecommunications company Hutchinson 3G , the mobile network of the same name, Boy Better Know, was created in November 2011 and existed until mid-2013.
