The Brömbsenmühle is a historic watermill in the part of Krummesse that belongs to the rural area of the city of Lübeck . It was previously operated by a damming of the Kastorfer Grenzbach , which flows into the Trave via the Stecknitz (today: Elbe-Lübeck Canal ) as a tributary . Historically, the Kastorfer Grenzbach formed the border to the neighboring duchy of Saxony-Lauenburg .

History of the watermill

The mill is one of 77 watermills in the 19th century in the catchment area of the Trave river system. It got its name after one of its previous owners, almost all of whom came from the patriciate of the Hanseatic city. After the knight Marquard von Krummesse had to sell half the village of Krummesse to the Lübeck councilor Segebodo Crispin due to a lack of liquidity in 1379 , the mill is also mentioned for the first time on the occasion of this transaction. The purchase price was 1,000 marks lüb. Pfennig and included half of the neighboring village of Niemark and half of Beidendorfer See .

The name of the mill goes back to the von Brömbsen family from Lübeck who owned the mill from 1618 to 1757. The mill was supplied with water from the Kastorfer Mühlenbach, which was dammed up in ponds. Due to the border location, the miller also had to operate the barrier and collect customs . The mill no longer has a water wheel. A turbine installed in 1937 was probably also removed with the grinding aisles at the end of the 1970s.

The windmills

Remnants of the windmill (2017)

Since the middle of the 18th century, next to the water mill, there were also several windmills, probably one after the other, which are no longer preserved today. The ruins of the last one collapsed after a fire in 1973 in 1993.
