Foundation and history

André Coindre

Its founder was Father André Coindre , who founded the first fraternity in the Diocese of Lyon ( France ) in 1821 . He became the first superior general , followed by his brother Father Vincent Coindre after his death. The general assembly of the General Chapter held in 1840 suggested a reorientation of the Congregation and applied to the Archbishop of Lyon for non- clerical and secular independence. He agreed to the proposal and recommended that the previous superior, Father Coindre, should put his office up for election. On September 13, 1841, his first secular brother, Brother Polycarp (see: Polycarp of Smyrna ) followed him in this office . He carried out a reorganization and thus ensured the stability and sustainable existence of the congregation. When Brother Polycarp died in 1859, the congregation consisted of 73 communities with 400 brothers and 70 schools.
The General House of today's Congregation is in Rome . Brother José Ignacio Carmona Ollo is currently the Superior General. Today the brotherhood has around 1200 members and is distributed worldwide in the order provinces of East Africa, Southeast Africa, Central South America, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Spain, France, Haiti, Madagascar, New England, New Orleans, New York, Philippines, Oceania and Senegal .

Religious philosophy

The rules of the order, which were reformed in 2007, refer to the work of St. Ignatius of Loyola and are based on the Augustine rules . The members of the fraternity are not priests, after their novitiate they take the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience ( evangelical counsels ).

USA and Canada

At the request of Bishop Michael Portier of Mobile , the General House sent five brothers to the United States in January 1847 . In Mobile , they founded the first teaching institute on American soil. The Order Province, later founded in the United States, received its own novitiate law in 1880 and expanded its field of activity to Canada . A religious province was also established in Canada by a resolution in 1900. As early as 1907, 84 schools and teaching facilities were built at which 9,000 people were taught. The number of members rose to 460 brothers in a very short time.

France

By 1901 the fraternity had convents in 20 French dioceses , its staff totaled 1,100 brothers, and they looked after 150 schools, academies and higher schools. The restriction of church and religious work between the years 1902 and 1905 culminated in the law separating church and state . Many fraternity institutions had to be closed and several conventions moved to Spain and Belgium .
