Brachymesia is a genus of dragonflies consisting of three species. The genus belongs to the subfamily Leucorrhiniinae and was described in 1889 by William Forsell Kirby . Ananimal of the previously undescribed species Brachymesia australis servedas the generotype . Today this species is known as Brachymesia furcata . The distribution area extends from the south of the United States to the north of Chile and Argentina .
features
Brachmesia species are medium to large, red or brown or black dragonflies and reach lengths between 38 and 54 millimeters. The abdomen is severely swollen in the first three segments. Their wings are transparent. There are brown markings in the costal field and between the nodus and the wing tip.
Habitat and way of life
The animals live in pools or swamps . They are very active in the sunshine.
